Allen Overton will begin his journey early on May 8, and he will be alone. He plans to use his hands for power; he’ll be leaving his wheelchair home.
Overton, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1989, will ride his recumbent three-wheeled hand cycle from Longmont to Illinois. He’ll bring a small pack that includes a blanket, lined jacket, water bottles, some clothes, tire patches and energy bars.
“It will be on-the-job training,” said Overton, 68, the resident manager of The Inn Between of Longmont. “I’ll learn as I go. The other training is getting my mind right. It will be what it’s going to be.”
He has enough money to get by, he said. And each day when he’s tired, he’ll stop.
“I’m not worrying about anything,” he said.
