LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A bicyclist headed to work said he was assaulted and nearly run down by a car Friday morning.

The incident happened along Barret Avenue near Tyler Park in the Highlands.Dan Cooley is hurt, but believes his injuries could have been much worse.

“It’s very tough,” he said. “Somebody who’s trying to get to work using a bicycle to drive around Louisville because he gets this stuff all the time.”

For the past six months, Cooley has been riding his bike along Barret to the Parkland Medical Center, where he works on the nursing staff. It’s only a seven-minute trip from his home.

But he said around 6:50 a.m., he was almost hit by a car pulling out of an apartment complex near Castlewood.Cooley admitted words and gestures were exchanged.He headed to the sidewalk, then he says the driver came after him.

“They stopped the car, hit my bike and knocked me over,” he said.Cooley said he suffered a ligament tear from the fall, but the attack wasn’t over. He said the passenger came after him, punching him in the face.Cooley said he has had some close calls while biking in the past, but he’s never been assaulted.

“This something more personal,” he said. “I think that they just wanted to take out some aggression on a bicyclist and I was in the guy in the way.”
