Italians ride wave of interest in cities’ cheap bike rentals
Romans are known for racing through their city streets with style. Once they rumbled by on chariots. Modern-day hipsters zip around on Vespas.
Now, authorities are pumping up a cleaner two-wheel alternative — the bicycle — as the most freewheeling and perhaps the fastest way to get about town.
Rome has rolled out a bike rental program for residents, chasing some of the success realized by Paris and Barcelona, major cities that invested in community cycling a year ago. Bike programs also exist in Stockholm, Amsterdam, Vienna and Lyons, France; London announced plans recently to examine the possibilities — as have some American cities, including Chicago.
