A story about the [tag]Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa[/tag] ([tag]RAGBRAI[/tag]), From the Des Moines Register:

The spectacle that is RAGBRAI - thousands of bicyclists, support-team members and people-watchers - converged Saturday on Missouri Valley.

The Harrison County town, normally with a population of 3,000, swelled by 10,000 or more.

Missouri Valley is the starting point this morning for the 36th edition of the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.

By the time the ride ends Saturday in Le Claire, the bikers will have passed through 18 of Iowa’s 99 counties and 51 towns.

The distance between Missouri Valley and Le Claire is a challenging 471 miles of hills and hollows and some flat stretches - although people seated on a bicycle for eight hours a day are more likely to remember the hills.

[tag]Bicycle[/tag] riders from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and a dozen foreign countries will take part in this year’s ride.

The riders will be greeted by thousands of people who line the streets of small towns, or find comfortable spots to people-watch under shade trees or on porches. And yes, in some places, there will be cows watching the passing scene as they munch grass in nearby pastures.

If you’re in the area, riding RAGBRAI, or have experienced it in the past, I’m interested in your comments.
