A friend called me a few minutes ago asking “what end of the world scenario” was causing people to line up at every gas station he passed. He said the intersections were clogged, and traffic was backing up.

Since my ride home cuts through the university campus and then through residential streets, I had no idea, and had to look it up online.

I can understand not wanting to be stuck somewhere, but panic? A run on the gas stations? Where do people really need to go on a weekend, in a college town, that requires an emergency fill-up? I sometimes think that when it comes to cars, people just don’t always think straight.

So, what’s it like where you are? Is there a gas-induced panic happening in your community?

Rising Gas Prices Cause Panic Among Motorists

Rising Gas Prices Cause Panic Among Motorists 9/12/08 - $5 a gallon gasoline has apparently hit mid-Michigan. AAA of Michigan earlier told WHMI that hurricane fears have prompted oil refineries to shut down, which has caused a surge in gas prices across not only Michigan but the entire country. On Friday, WHMI listeners were reporting $5 gallon a gas in the Lansing and Jackson areas. The spike has seemingly caused a panic among motorists who are now scrambling to fill up at cheaper prices before the cost goes up everywhere. As of Friday afternoon, gas prices were still below the $4 mark for self serve regular gasoline across most of Livingston County.
